Damn boom bouncing all around and sail fluttering.

So I went for a sail yesterday and I had the main reefed. On port tack, always and only on port tack, the sail would flutter and the boom would bounce. It did this in all but very light winds and did not change significantly whether close hulled or broad reach or any other port tack. I also tried it with & with out the jib up, same results. I also had no vang installed.

Why did it do this? And why only on port tack?

Thanks,
Brad

Re: Damn boom bouncing all around and sail fluttering.

Boom bouncing; install and adjusting the vang tight, adjust the main halyard tighter, and check the main sheet and traveller.

With tight boom vang and tight main halyard the boom should not be free to bounce.

Re: Damn boom bouncing all around and sail fluttering.

What kind of reefing? if jiffy/slab, which tack you're on shouldn't matter.

But roller-reefing (boom rolls), could be a difference since sail foot isn't directly over the boom.

Or in-mast furling/reefing? I don't know, except those guys don't have enough battenning to stabilize the leech, which could make your boom want to vibrate.

Other than than, I'm at a loss beyond the tight vang (do you have a vang?) advice given by others. Or if you have a traveler, you could ease it all the way out so the mainsheet is pulling more downwards than sideways.

Re: Damn boom bouncing all around and sail fluttering.

The boat is a Hunter 260 with factory reefing system, no main roller furling. I thought of the vang issue(I don't have one installed right now) but I discounted it because it only happened on port tack. That's what has me so confused.
Thanks for the responses.

Probably some set or drift was making your tacks uneven, even if you thought they were the same. Current offsetting you, wind misread a bit, mast maybe out of column...If you look over the whole picture you'll find something wasn't the same on both tacks.

And of course, a vang exists for a reason.

Re: Damn boom bouncing all around and sail fluttering.

Current was non-existent or negligible at best as I am on a small inland lake. I was trying to point higher on port tack but due to the boom bouncing and sail fluttering I tried several other points of sail and all got the same result, unless the wind slowed, then everything was fine.
Confusing!

Barring the obvious things you could see (like there is a massive lump sticking out one side of the hull), I'd guess that the standing rigging on one side is tighter than on the other.

Sounds like the rig is out of wack. Time for a check and a tune maybe.

I thought of that and slacked it, no change unfortunately.
