Danger - greek taxes

DANGER, GREEK RECIPROCAL TAX

We are trapped in Pylos by the Port Police who have forbidden us to leave. They are demanding 9,500 euros in unpaid reciprocal taxes. There is no invoice, no clear calculation, no explanation why this was not requested by all the other Port Police who have stamped our Transit Log over the years.

We are found a helpful lawyer who came to the Port Police with us. The Police can only offer to escort us by gunboat to Kalamata where we can leave the boat and pay next year. We are depressed and frightened.

Please tell all non-EU boats to stay away from Greece - new and arbitrary laws can catch you at any time.

More on this saga tomorrow.

Good catch, scratchee.

Michael J Roberts,

It looks like you're not the only sailor to have been caught unawares by this. You might consider posting an advisory about it on Cruisers Forum (in particular), Anything Sailing, Sailboat Owners, Sail Far, and perhaps even Sailing Anarchy. (Tho if you're new to that last one, don't be surprised by the... er... "unruly" reception you might receive.)

Hope you get your boat back soon

Jim

From the noonsite web site
"Reciprocal Tax Charge (replacing the Cruising Permit): 15 euro per metre, charged for each period of 3 months spent in Greek waters. Payable at the end of each 90 day period and not payable if departing before 90 days."

Re: Danger - greek taxes

Perhaps the only change is that now that Greece is broke, someone on high has reminded the port police to be more vigilant about collecting an old tax they used to ignore.

Great googly-moogly, if the greeks are billing the OP 9500 euros, he must have one big-ass boat, and have stayed in greece one long-ass time.

Re: Danger - greek taxes

What do you actually get for this money?

What are these permits actually for?
Do they pertain only to Greece? or can they be 'enjoyed' all over the Med?
