Rock Hall Channel Entrance Depth

Heading up to Rock Hall this week-end. Heard that they have dredged recently, but haven't visited since then. Draw 5"7". Any recent experience with the appoach channel depths?

Re: Rock Hall Channel Entrance Depth

The following is from the Active Captain description of the entrance hope it helps:

Rock Hall Harbor Entrance Approach: To enter Rock Hall Harbor, go from R4 directly to the blue tank water tower. This will head you to the right of what is charted as the marked entrance into the harbor. Proceed to the new position of G1 and pass it on your port side. Slow down as you pass this can because the shoal is in front of an in the middle of the harbor entrance markers. As you pass G1 immediately turn to daymark R4 and pass close to this red marker on your starboard side. Dredging of the channel was completed in June 2012, controlling depths are now better than 7 feet.

You'll be fine. Mind the marks and don't leave the channel. Came out of there yesterday (July 8) and didn't see less than 8 feet. Depending on tide you may experience considerably more. The "hump" in the middle of the channel has been removed.

Enjoy your visit.

I ran aground a few days ago at low tide because I did not honor that small green can just before the breakwater. I was able to reverse my way free. Once inside turn to port and go all the way around clockwise. A big cat ran aground coming straight in.

Re: Rock Hall Channel Entrance Depth

If you're talking about the big cat that was aground on July 4... he had anchored there the night before for the fireworks show. Hung around swimming the next day (being able to stand in chest deep water could have been a clue to him that he was in too shallow) and ended up grounded. As the tide came in he got off. Important fact is ... he was NOT in the channel!

MGM thanks for the clarification. I think that's the first cat I've ever seen aground.

First for me too, they were afloat when I left the harbor and aground upon my return. Did you notice the five lines they'd tied together and then tied to the day mark in an attempt to winch themselves afloat?

As soon as the tide returned they got into the channel and departed.

Very shoaly around Swan creek - I encountered depths of 4' there. If you approach from the north, head out into open water.
