Motors & Sailboats

I want to buy a 26ft. Macgregor to do "The Loop." What is the most economical motor I can get that will allow me to average 5 or 6 mph burning the least amount of fuel? Example...The charts say a 6hp. merc only burns 1/2 a gallon an hour.
Thanks.

Which model Mac 26 are you speaking of?

Personally I would choose the 26X, but you may not like that at all. The only reason I say the X is because it carries a much bigger engine and while I wouldn't trust the boat on plane, I wouldn't mind being able to get to a protected waterway in the event of a storm faster than with a little 9.9. Like I said, that's just me, you might feel completely different as the bigger engine will drink more. As far as engines go I have a Nissan 9.9 that does pretty well at pushing my Hunter 260 around and it's probably not the best on fuel but it isn't the worst option either.

I looked at the 26X before I purchased my Hunter. What model where you looking at?

I know this is a bit off topic, but if nothing is set in stone, why have you decided on a MacGregor? Why are you thinking about minute details like which brand of outboard is most fuel efficient when you haven't even selected a boat yet?

Just askin'

The best engine on a sailboat is the one that is turned off! Get a boat that sails well, and you will sail more!
