cracked hull

Hey everyone. Nice forum. I'm still trying to find my way around here so forgive me. I've purchased a sea spray 15 cat. and the hull has some spider webbing in spots but nothing taking on water. I've sanded the clear coat to prep it. Can I put on a layer of fiberglass resin gel to reinforce the hull and should I use fiberglass mesh as well or just the resin? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sean

Re: cracked hull

Consider posting a picture of the areas of concern. This would provide better information on how best to repair.

Re: cracked hull

Sounds like gel coat cracks, think about repairing it with a gel coat repair kit, if its structual then go the way of the glass and resin.

Re: cracked hull

Not clear if its gel coat cracks which is just cosmetic or cracks in the fiberglass itself which is structural. As suggested, some pics would help.

And unlike the paint on a car, there's no clearcoat on fiberglass gelcoat.

If you're going to re-gelcoat the affected area...Recently, my son and I did some work on spider cracks on the topside of our Boston Whaler tender. After sanding down to remove hazing and then cleaning with acetone, we used fiberglass reinforced bonds and skim coated it, working it in many directions to get as good a fill in the cracks as possible. We were very pleased with the results once we sanded it down and painted.
