That is most definitely a Carter 37. No question. Great boat. Strange hull to deck joint.

There is the definitive answer! If I remember correctly Bob worked in Dick Carter's shop around that time.

very nice looking boat but it will cost double or tripple what it would be worth to replace all that is missing. just moving it to your place is going to be 5K. no standing and running rigging, stanchions, life lines and no sails ? I would ask my self, and why are there three other boats behind the barn?

Jeff:
Can't recall specifically ( that was quite a few years and beers ago) but the Carter 39 had a flush joint with no toe rail at all. This 37 has a teak toe rail so maybe it has aged better there.
Pretty sure that was the YDRA hull with a coach roof and accomodations added. Yves-Marie Tanton drew the hull lines. There is a lot of shape in that hull.

That is an interesting comment on all counts.

I had no idea that Yves Tanton worked for Carter but that does make sense. Dick Carter's shop was quite the yacht designer incubater of that era. Wasn't Doug Peterson there too?

Jeff:

When I got my job at Carter's office (the tower) Yves-Marie was top dog. He did all the hull lines and he was very, very good at it. Chuck Paine was next in line with Mark Lindsay and me both working under Yves-Marie and Chuck. I worked with Yves-Marie. It was a lively group and our lunchtime conversations were often stimulating.
As the story was told to me by Yves-Marie and Chuck Paine, Peterson was there for a week and then just disapeared. He simply failed to show up on Monday. The next time they heard of him was when GANBARE won the One Ton NA's. I was there at that time. I took Doug Peterson's place. Maybe Doug looked around and thought to himself, "I can do better than this." And the fact is he could. The good news was I got a job and I learned a lot working with that staff.
Without my time at Carter's I doubt I could ever have come up with the Valiant 40.

Thank you, that is a great story. I worked for Charlie Wittholz for a while and he had stories like that about Alden and Rhodes' office. I fear that the brotherhood of design will get lost in these days of number crunching and computer jockeying.

Once during the Nap shpw when Ted Brewer's design school had their annual dinner I got to sit next to Charles Wittholtz. It was an amazing honor. Charlie had "the eye".
