Exclamation So. California - Good small boat sailing locations

In southern California, between Los Angeles and San Diego, where are the best small boat (16' - 20') sailing locations? Are there any popular public marinas or beaches to launch from? How about reasonably priced sailing or yacht clubs? I would like to find a place with some fleets of dinghies or catamarans where I can do a little semi-competitive racing with same or similar types of boats.

Are there any places that rent sailboats in this size range?

Thanks,
Richard

Try Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach - they have a very active Lido 14 fleet with a number of Lido 15s available for charter, plus loads of fun.

There were a lot of people sailing small boats in Newport Beach. I will never sail into there again under any conditions, however, due to the psycho harbor cops. True sociopaths, one and all.
Everybody that I know that races small boats loves Long Beach.

Long beach is great. You can sail all day behind the large breakwater. There is a lot to see and if you are adventurous, go out on the ocean. Marina Del Rey is good for smaller boats. Try channel Islands harbor for a windier place. Just for a small boat, you can't beat Long Beach
