winch replacement

I would like to replace my standard sheet winches with self-tailing. are there used winches available or should I go with new?
Should I go with #30''s or 40''s?

There are used winches available. One place to try is www.newportnautical.com or one of the other consignment shops depending on where you are physically located. Used will certainly be cheaper but may need servcing and have other wear issues depending. As for the size you will need to tell us what is on there now, the size and make of the boat, and what you use it for.
