Re: Sailing from Seattle to Port Townsend for 1st time

Might be able to do it in 5 hrs with a bigger faster boat, but doubt even with a BIG ebb that the OP's boat will do it much quicker than 6-7, in normal winds. A gale southerly, big ebb, then 5 hrs. A Farr 30 did it last march in just over/under 3 hrs. A record time from what I understand.

If you have a northerly, that 35 miles becomes 45 or so with tacking......could take awhile even with an ebb, then you have wind/waves fighting the ebb, so steeper shorter waves......not fun! I would plan two days from shil shoal minimum with a 20-24' boat as the OP has.

We made it to Port Townsend in 12:00 hours against a flood in a Beneteau 285 it was a long day, but by the time we made it we went for dinner and explored quite a night. From their it was off to the San Juans and the Golf Islands.

The beer will taste really good in PT after your passage. One of our favorite spots to wander around. From my log on 22 June, 1999. Ebb tide pushing us along with 15 knots of wind, off on an adventure of a lifetime, anchored in Pt. Ludlow, exhausted after 3 years of planning our trip....23 June, 1999, beam reaching to PT, Winds E,Cloudy, 60 degrees anchored off marina. Off to Victoria, B.C. in the morning. My last night in the Puget Sound...13 years ago. Enjoy your trip!

Re: Sailing from Seattle to Port Townsend for 1st time

I've always done PT to shilshole in one day in my 26' boat. Last time took 5:15 and there was no wind so I just motored the whole way. Figure about 5.5 kt boat speed so SOG around 6 to 7 the whole way. Sailing DW without towing a dinghy and it would have been faster. I've been to Kingston and Edmonds enough that I'd rather not stop there on my way to the SJs.
