I prefer epoxy as it's water proof (that's why its used over fiberglass as a barrier coat) and yes the cloth and epoxy are combined to give the rudder overall strength. You still should have metal stringers attached to the rudder stock for mechanical strength through to the tiller or wheel.

I had good luck with Foss Foam when replacing the rudder on my 1983 Hunter 37 Cutter. They had the mold in stock and shipped the rudder a week later - very pleasant to deal with. I did coat the new rudder with epoxy barrier coat before applying the initial anti-fouling. 10 years later, that rudder is still going strong. I was using a stock design that they had made before - I can't offer an opinion on their custom work.

well the project has begun, alot slower gowing than I'd hoped, runs to the hardware store and such. thank you all for your imput. X your fingers not the best at such projects.

So how are you building your new rudder? Any metal work need to be done?

using the hardware from old rudder, plywood coverd with fiberglass for the first one, now starting the second one, learning from my mistakes.
