Desperatly looking for an answer

Hi , I'm having trouble with my sailboat speed...Beneteau 423 2007

Got the boat last year, she had a new paint on her( green ablative paint ) and all season was doing good speed (averaging the 7Kts) We spend the winter in the water since we are live aboard and now, I cant seem to past the 6 Kts mark.

First I thought it was the bottom that was dirty which it was.... I cleaned it really good with a brush and didnt change a thing. I then decided to take the boat out of the water for a nice paint job. Just did that last week. Sanded off all that old paint and put a new coat of $$$ Micron CSC ( 4 gallons total )+ waxed from the water line to 16 inches above. To my disappointement, not going much faster. At same RPM ( motoring ) I gained 0.3 kts and can't get more than 6 Kts at full throttle.

All my settings are the same:
GPS ground speed in Kts
motoring or sailing, no speed ( so that takes the rigging out of the question )
I think it's pretty much it...any ideas what to do next

could it be the prop that slows the boat down that much...it looked pretty good to me...not sparkling or anything but in good shape!

Please help...

Re: Desperatly looking for an answer

Doubt tachometer is off, maybe. Have you verified speed with GPS and knotmeter?

A lot more weight in the boat, from her becoming a household?

Re: Desperatly looking for an answer

same prop as last year, measured the speed with hand held GPS too...same thing! Tackmeter is also same and didnt touch it from last year. And plus, the speed is also bad when under sail!!
A little bit more weight but not much at all...we were also live aboard last summer. Added to the weight about 5 heaters and my hockey gear...haha! should not make a big difference I think!

You might be surprised how quickly the weight adds up. Perhaps it is a weight distribution issue? Poor fore/aft trim could slow you down.

Hockey gear on a boat? Eeeeeew!

Haha!! ewww alright! Only on the boat for storage. I play in the winter when the boat is shrink wrapped and it stays outside with lots of Febreeze and regular cleaning!!

Re: Desperatly looking for an answer

Are you measuring boat speed through the water or over the ground? GPS only does over the ground, which is not always the same. Your boat only sails through the water.

I have had knot meters go bad or go out of calibration, or the little paddle wheel gets something wrapped around its axle.

Re: Desperatly looking for an answer

Is full throttle the same RPM as last year? Maybe your filters or air intake are partially clogges. Same sails as last year?

Re: Desperatly looking for an answer

I've tried it all. Speed over ground going with or against the current. Closehauled, beam, broad reach...I just dont think it's a setting problem.. I will try again with speed over water!

Maybe weight, maybe prop...no sure what else it could be!!

thanks for the inputs...
