Rhode Island Boater Rescued After 11 Hours in the Water With No Lifejacket | Cruising Compass

Its my opinion to always wear an inflatable if alone on a boat, or with a in-experienced crew.

That's a great outcome for the guy. No doubt, he'll wear a pfd and carry a radio from now on. This time of year, there literally isn't a day that goes by that I don't hear a Coast Guard announcement of a person in the water. After hearing it repeatedly for hours, it always puts a knot in my stomach.

Jeanneau 54DS

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

Hey,

I do a lot of solo sailing so I promised my wife that I will always wear an inflatable pfd and I also carry a handheld vhf.

Re: News - Man Overboard!

I wear an inflatable and this year decided to get a PLB. Even the small handheld VHFs are bulky to have clipped on your belt. The little PLBs look like they fit the bill.

Wow!

He clearly kept his head though, didn't panic, rode the currents. An impressive will to live. One salty dude.. great outcome. Alone in the dark, it had to seem hopeless..

Any other time of the year the water temps would have taken him with that much time in the water.

Gotta love his ne accent lol, "queer wave"

Seriously though, isn't swimming for shore the worst thing you can do for hypothermia? Isn't it best to stay in place and try to conserve heat? Or is that only when you actually have a pfd on?
