Another missing sailor,

Only I watched this one sail out of the marina on the most beautiful benign day you can imagine. Tuesday about 1 PM, We'd gone to the boat in Dana Point only to find that our boat was being polished/waxed (I'd told my detailer to just do it when he had a chance cause it's busy season). So we were sitting at the coffee shop when a boat went by, admiral asked "is that some kind of race boat?" So I pointed out the mainsail cut, retractable bow sprit etc.
Later from the headlands we saw the boat about halfway from the harbor to where the boat was found. Wednesday on local TV news we saw the report. So far there seems to be very little known, there were thousands of people on the beaches he passed.

Re: Another missing sailor,

So Sad.

Sounds like he was practicing for the 2014 Single Handed Transpac.

Re: Another missing sailor,

"Newport Beach resident Andrew Szaz was last seen around noon Tuesday in Dana Point Harbor working on his 30-foot sail boat, “Babe,” Orange County Sheriff’s officials said."

Cap, It sounds like you might be able to provide the investigators a slightly later vantage point......

Re: Another missing sailor,

Very sad. RIP.

Interesting they mention homicide, and even more interesting that a demasting would happen by grounding.

Please post more information, if and as you find out more.

Re: Another missing sailor,

They could be conducting a homicide investigation just to ensure they will properly gather and document any possible evidence before its destroyed. Would not be good if they just treated it as a man overboard, then after the boat had been towed and cleaned the body washes up full of bullet holes. Too late then. Hope I am not being insensitive with this example; just using it to make a point.

At least he died doing what he loved and not incapacitated in a nursing home. God bless him.

Re: Another missing sailor,

Dang, I know a Newport Beach detective, but he won't be able to say anything while an investigation is underway.

Yes God Bless Him.

Re: Another missing sailor,

They searched by aircraft and boat Wednesday & Thursday and have suspended searching without finding anything. I've been out in the area yesterday & today and weather has been incredibly pleasant. Warm, light winds, glassy surface, minimal waves, just not the kind of days you could imagine someone going missing at sea.

Re: Another missing sailor,

A few years back I watched a older guy come in & get on a mooring from where I was on my mooring . I watched him as the sun went down putting on his sail covers . The next morning they found him floating . I never found out what had happened . I just figured he went overboard somehow & couldn't get back aboard & the cold water had it's way with him . It can happen any time . No sense being scared of it .

Re: Another missing sailor,

If foul play/suicide is ruled out, this highlights that it is not safe to unclip at any time when singlehanded. Going over=the end. It's a very, very difficult rule to follow. It is that little mistake/trip/inattention when you least expect it on a perfectly nice day that will bite you.
