Where to do STCW 95 in Canada, Mexico or Carribean?

Hello everyone,

I've been travelling and teaching scuba for the past five years and I've decided a life at sea is the life for me. I'm heading to Vancouver Island in September and driving down to Baja, Mexico in October and was wondering if anyone knew any places that offer the STCW 95 at a reasonable price somewhere on the west coast?

My current plan is to work a dive season in Baja and then I'll (probably)fly back to South Africa to complete my coastal skipper and power boat tickets before searching for crewing opportunities. However, I'd love to get onto boats as sooner, so I figure it would be a good idea to do my STCW as soon as possible. The STCW is only around $400 in South Africa, but most places I've looked up in Canada, the U.S. and the Carribean are offering the course for 750-800 US dollars which is pretty expensive. Does anyone know of any reasonably price courses in the Americas or Carribean?

Any help appreciated.

Regards,
Brendan

I've never seen any in the states that cost less that $400.00 .

Thanks for your reply Tempest,

I'm don't expect I'll find it cheaper than in South Africa, but if I could find someone offering the STCW for 500-600 U.S. then I'd consider doing as it will mean I'll have a better chance of finding crew work sooner. I probably won't be going to S.A. until May.

I got mine in Houma, LA. Financially it might be more prudent to just take a first aid course. Check out Falck

Thanks BGallinger,

I sent Falck an email. Do you remember what your course cost?

I'm actually already a first aid instructor having done it as part of my scuba instructor training. I'll have to do the full STCW eventually, so I'm interested in completing all course components.
