Perseid meteor shower

Did any one go out this Saturday night- Sunday morning to see the Perseid shower.

Work commitments have cut in to sailing time this summer, but sat on the beach on Cape May west coast between 3:00 and 5:00 AM, and saw a few good streaks and a lot of faint ones even with some cloud cover.

Re: Perseid meteor shower

I tried last year, but even out on the bay, there's way too much light pollution in the Houston area to see much of anything.

Re: Perseid meteor shower

We're in a marina until October so there's a lot of light around. I stood looking up until it got uncomfortable and didn't get to see anything but my mast.

Re: Perseid meteor shower

We shot out on Saturday night with the intention of getting to the darker parts of Lake Michigan to see it. Got ~12 NM out from Chicago before we were becalmed for a few hours and ended up starting back.

Saw some meteors, not nearly as much as they were saying though.

I am in Avon NC on vacation. We saw a LOT of them last night. Clear skies and millions of stars. Forgot how beautiful the sky can be when you get away from big cities.

Re: Perseid meteor shower

We were anchored out away from lights in W. Florida. Had a magnificent showing. Some appeared as if they just streaked a few hundred feet over the mast.

Re: Perseid meteor shower

I propose a challenge for the Leonid meteor shower, Saturday November 17.

Find a relatively dark sky anchorage and report on the shower. If you have the equipment and skills which I do not, take some photographs or time lapse images.

My closest dark sky anchorage is Cohansey Cove, a long day sail if the tides are in my favor but for November 15, 16, 17 the tidal current will only be in my favor for a few day light hours resulting in a two day sail especially with sunset at 4:45 PM.

Moon set is before 9:00PM that weekend so the sky should be dark.
