Alburg 30 questions

I looked at a 1968 Alburg 30 today. Is it normal to be able to see light through the fiberglass like this where the hull meets the cabin top?

They are Alberg 30s (designed by the late great Carl Alberg). They are great boats and what you are looking at is normal.

Totally normal, freaked me right out the first time I saw it. I was peeling a previous owner's failed attempt to insulate. Right now I'm preping for a new insulation job, which will take care of the light too.

Yep, normal. does the boat your looking at have a bowsprit or something? I see that large stainless plate that looks bolted through the hull. Just curious

If your talking about the angle iron stainless? I don't know. What do you think it's for.

Also, from what i can see the chainplate bolts dont look original...which is a good thing

Not sure, whats on the outside of the hull? what do the thru bolts attach to?

Gotta disagree on the chainplate/chainplate bolts - they do appear original, there are only three @ 5/16th or even 1/4" maybe, and they are undersized. They will need replacing as will the chainplates in all likelihood.

FWIW, My (ex) A-30 did not look like that at the hull to deck as viewed from the inside. Mine was sealed solid with heavy roving that appeared to be factory. I had an early hull# though, and that might make a difference. I'd glass up what you see there on that boat for a nice clean finish and added strength.

Those knees/gussets are a known weak spot, and those appear weak. I'd plan on extending and glassing those as well. They have probably had years of water migration into them, I'd bet if you drilled into them, the bit would come out soggy and full of brown mush.
