Re: sailor missing in Chesapeake Bay

This sounds like the water conditions were deteriorating and a life jacket could have saved this mans life.

Re: sailor missing in Chesapeake Bay

Annapolis race week was going on then. We were just off Thomas point when the cell rolled through. We saw anywhere from 35-38 kts from the original 8-10 it started at. I have that particular race on video and am working on resizing it and getting it online.

It was a bit rough, but didn't last long enough to really kick up any seas. It's a shame someone lost their life.

Re: sailor missing in Chesapeake Bay

I'm not super familar with that area but last time we crossed from Rock Hall headed to Baltimore I remember it seemed the wind increased as we approached the Patapsco to well beyond what I expected, based on what I'd seen mid-bay.

At the time, I just assumed the winds had picked up, but now wonder if the mouth of the Patapsco might share some traits with the mouth of the Potomac where it seems wind may be channeled from certain compass points and coupled with tide against river current builds chop faster and higher than the surrounding area.

This tragedy is a good arguement for donning PFD's the minute it STARTS getting sketchy especially if you are going out of the cockpit.

Interestingly I noticed several people wearing PFD's this past Sunday when the bay was as calm as I've ever seen it. It was intersting because in my experience you rarely see folks on the Chesapeake in PFD's unless its blowing stink.

Re: sailor missing in Chesapeake Bay

We were about 1/2 mile in front of the Phoenix when the winds kicked up. It happened pretty quickly, went from 5 to 10, then to 20, then gusts to about 38 and pouring down rain. When I noticed the dark clouds behind us as we were entering the Patapsco, I took some photos and captured that boat in the pix. He had full sails up, so I think that factored into the accident. We only had our jib out and were able to pull it in quickly. Wish we heard a distress call, as we could have turned around to assist.

The winds aren't usually bad when we enter the Patapsco, our marina is right at the mouth basically, so we are very familiar with the area.

'One eye to the sky and one ear to the radio..' Though not mandatory for pleasure cruisers..I keep my marine radio on scan set to some of the primary channels.

Re: sailor missing in Chesapeake Bay

We were out sailing on the Chesapeake this past weekend and I noticed that there were frequent wind changes. There seemed to be residual outer bands of the remnants of hurricane Isaac. Sunday night was windy. Stormy and thunderstorms came through.

I don't know if those rivers have particularly weird wind conditions but we did not notice any when we sailed through there a month ago.
