sea lion chasing our sailboat in seattle

This sea lion chased our sailboat crossing Puget Sound from Blake Island on Labor Day weekend. This guy followed and swam under the boat both under sail and power a good 10 minutes. I hear they do this to hide from larger predators... wonder what was in the water? Or did it think we were fishing and hoping to catch a salmon (we were not)? Or was it just friendly? This never gets old.

My guess is that in his past, some boater threw him something to eat, and he associated your boat with a meal.

That's fun! When we were sailing down the northern Ca coast in late winter, as we left each harbor and as we entered each harbor a baby sea lion would come to play in the bubbles from our prop. They would just go CRAZY like a puppy, jumping and barking and flopping. Really fun.

Perhaps it's just me but that sure looks more like a Pacific Harbor Seal than a Sea Lion to me. From the San Juans to Sand Diego, they will escort one entering or departing a harbor, riding ones pressure wave fore or aft; and, expecting a treat in exchange.

N'any case, a great entertainment, eh? Good for you!

Re: sea lion chasing our sailboat in seattle

There are a few sea lions here in the sound, but that does look more like a harbor seal than a sea lion to me. SL's like to hang out near the locks a lot during salmon runs, other times they can be found hanging out on the different marker buoy's, and some of the bigger hamburger buoys that some of the tug companies use to transfer barge from small tugs taking the barges into and out of the harbor, to those that take said barge on the ocean nd vice versa.

Re: sea lion chasing our sailboat in seattle

I've talked to divers who have had them come up behind them and grab their swim fins like it was a game. I think that would cause me to wet my wet suit even more. We get them up around La Conner now and then and they're pretty thick in the Cattle Pass area. The big ones look like they could be 8 to 10 feet long.

Saw an elephant seal one time out at Minor Island. Wouldn't have believed they were in our waters if I hadn't seen it myself
