2QM15 Fuel System Need Help

I just bought a San Juan 28 knowing the engine hadn't ran in about 2 years. I have pumped out the old fuel, changed the filters (that were plugged), had the injector pump checked out, bench tested and radared and still can get this thing to run. Now I am questioning the mechanical pump and the volume of fuel that it is supplying to the injector pump. I have been looking online for a new mechanical pump but... I need help, Suggestions? Questions? Fire away... thanks

Re: 2QM15 Fuel System Need Help

You need to start at the tank and work forward and up.
Is the pick-up in the tank clean? Fuel line clear? Have you bled the system? Is the filter full of clean fuel?
Is fuel getting to the injectors?
That engine can run for hours on a gallon of fuel so I would not expect the pump to have much output.

Re: 2QM15 Fuel System Need Help

Been through this. Need more info. If fuel is getting to injectors it should run. When I thought I had bled the system, I hadn't.
First question is, Is there fuel at the injectors? Do not confuse the return line banjo with the injectors. Injectors are on the side. Crack open the nut on the injector and turn over. Start with the front injector and then do the rear. Don't stop at the front one.

you can replace the machanical pump with a low pressue 12 volt electrical one from any auto parts about $30 bucks, yanmars are notorius for being hard to bleed, you can use a small amount of ether [not much]sometimes that will work

Re: 2QM15 Fuel System Need Help

Put a squeeze bulb between the fuel supply and your diaphragm (feed) pump and prime using it until you get fuel without bubbles at the filter then at the injectors. You can pick one up at Walmart for a few bucks. Check your fuel lines to see if you need a bulb with quarter inch or five sixteenths fittings. Squeeze the bulb while venting then tighten the banjo before allowing the bulb to refill. Repeat until no air.

Re: 2QM15 Fuel System Need Help

I had to bleed mine recently after changing the fuel filters and it took a while to get it going. Jppp is spot on. Here is the manual's instructions:

Re: 2QM15 Fuel System Need Help

I am not getting fuel to the injectors. I do have fuel to the injector pump but not a very large quantity when I turn the engine over. It pulsates a small quantity not a solid stream. I had the injector pump bench tested by a shop and put under the radar. they said that the injector pump appears to fine. But I do not get anything on the high side. I am considering installing an electric pump between my large coleser filter and the mechanical lift pump. also considering by-passing the lift pump completely and going to the secondary filter just prior to the injector pump. suggestions??? BTW Thank you in advance for your participation.

Re: 2QM15 Fuel System Need Help

You won't see much fuel at all at the injectors, injector pump etc. Did you crack open the fitting on the high side of the injector pump and are not getting fuel there?

You do know that the 2QM15 does NOT have a separate fuel kill system, right? The fuel cut-off is integral with the throttle. Have you tried to advance the throttle, open the decompression levers and have someone crank the engine to pump fuel?

If the throttle is all the way back, it will effectively stop fuel flow through the high pressure pump.
