Moderator: Why can't I attach pics??!!

I've been on this forum for over 3 years, and I've never been able to attach a picture. I follow all the "rules" (max size 97.7 KB, max width 800, max height 600), but it ALWAYS fails. Yet I see others routinely able to attach pics.

What is the problem? FYI, I use Firefox with Windows XP and 7.

Do it from Photobucket

You meant of course 'attach pics to a post' and not you profile or sig as you can obviously already do this.

There are two ways to achieve the result quickly and easily. If the pic is already on line then click on the 'insert image' icon above (thats the one which looks like a min postcard) and paste the url of the image.

Alternatively as per Chef's advice if the image is on your own computer but not online then upload to a Photobucket account and paste from there.

Re: Moderator: Why can't I attach pics??!!

I've done what you are suggesting many times before, and it works but very cumbersome because I need to manually scale down my pictures before uploading to Photobucket. If I don't reduce the pictures, they will expand the post columns so much that they screw up the word wrap.

I'd like to be able to click the "Manage Attachments" button and attach pictures that way. That way the site creates a reduced thumbnail automatically so they are out of the way unless someone chooses to click on them. I see dozens of other people who are able to do this, and don't understand why it fails ever time I try to upload. But every time I click the "Upload" button in the dialog box, I get "Upload of file failed." It should work because my pictures are following the appropriate rules: max size 97.7 KB, max width 800, max height 600.

Re: Moderator: Why can't I attach pics??!!

I have experienced the same problem...so, I'd like to hear the solution too.

I have followed chef's advice and used photobucket successfully. But, would be interested in knowing why the manage attachement option doesn't work for me.

Re: Moderator: Why can't I attach pics??!!

Can you manually post the text of some of your photobucket URLs so we can 1) enjoy your pictures, and 2) see if we can spot a problem?

I guess I should ask, do you get the error while uploading to photobucket, or when you load the link into sailnet?

Man, the "pics or it didn't happen" comments must drive you crazy!

Rick,

I suggest you give up and download Chrome as your browser, then use Picasa 3 for your photos. Works well if you regularly use Google as your default page.

Let me try a third time to make this clear:

I have no problem uploading to Photobucket. I have no problem linking those pictures on Sailnet. I don't need a tutorial on how to do that. I have over a hundred pictures linked on this forum that you can already enjoy. Just search my posts.

Here's my tutorial to all of you on how it's supposed to work:

The Sailnet forum has a feature to upload pictures directly to the website. When posting a message, scroll down to "Additional Options" where it says "Attach Files" and click "Manage Attachments":

When you click on the button, another window comes up to allow you to upload your pictures. But doing so always results in an error message for me:

However, I see other people who are able to host their pictures on Sailnet - just do "Show Image" on their pictures and you can see that they're hosted on Sailnet. Here's one example:

Sailing into the slip

I want to know why they are able to, and I cannot. Tempest would like to know this too. I suspect that there are others who would like to know, so why not explain it here so we can all use this feature.

Re: Moderator: Why can't I attach pics??!!

FWIW I've never been able to successfully 'attach' an image either via the path posted above. The file is always rejected for me as well.

Soo..... rather than waste time I've turned to Photobucket like so many others. btw I don't 'resize' any images before uploading, and they always post reasonably sized.

Re: Moderator: Why can't I attach pics??!!

I use image shack, and upload using a 640 width/15" screen or some such option. Then I use the brackets [] with img in the middle, picture location addy, brackets with /img in the middle and that works. I too do not use ANY forums how to link a pic setup as shown in post 8.
