Motor???

Woo Hooooo ...
I thought I'd found a boat. A Capri14.2 but before I could get back, it was sold . But that is ok, ive found another!! which leads to my question. I will be looking at a MacGregor 22 that seems to be in good shape, but they want to sell me an outboard with it. What it the max weight and HP that should be used on this boat?

Re: Motor???

I would stick a 15 HP egg beater on it with e start, that way it can charge your batts as well

Re: Motor???

Isn't 15 HP on a 22 footer a bit of overkill? I would say 6 HP max.

That's too much.

5-6 hp should be fine. 10 would be a lot. You have to think about what kind of torque the engine mount can handle. Mine maxes out with a 10 hp and it's 26' and 5,000lb displacement. Currently I have a 5 hp on it that's worked. I'd switch to 10 hp if I was in any kind of current.

Re: Motor???

Let the wind pipe up a bit and you are going to struggle getting up against it if needs be with a 6 also I rather have a 15 trundle along then a 6 running in high revs, and as far as I know they don't do a 6 with e start and alternator.
That was my line of thought when I sugested a 15 e start

Re: Motor???

Some years ago, my brother had a 22 Santana, fixed keel. He did just fine with a 3 HP. 6 HP is more than enough.

the Mac 22 was originally spec'd for a max 10 HP. the Honda 9.9 has both charging and elec start. I believe the 8HP does also, get the extra long shaft model, 25" shaft. only thing your motor will be worth more then the boat.

Re: Motor???

A 10hp 2-stroke probably though, which would likely weigh considerably less than a 10hp four, all of which are also going to be twins. It's not the HP you really need to worry about, it's the weight on the transom.
My 24', 4000lbs (loaded) boat does just fine with an old 7.5hp Honda in all kinds of winds and current. I don't have it hooked up for charging either, every now and then I just bring the battery home and charge it here.
On a 22', 6hp would be plenty, a 4hp would probably be fine too, a 15hp beast is probably going to mean the transom takes full advantage of the foam flotation most of the time
