Maine to Chesapeake Fall Passage

I am looking for advice for a potential passage from Penobscot Bay down to Deltaville, VA.

If you have made this passage, I would appreciate any thoughts or guidance.

Thanks!

Re: Maine to Chesapeake Fall Passage

I did most of that route two years ago on my Catalina 27. Get the current Eldridge Tide & Pilot Book first. It will carry you all the way from Penobscot past NYC for tides and currents and more. It's extremely helpful on this trip. Also, take the Cape Cod Canal instead of going outside.

I alternated between anchoring out overnight and staying at a marina, but mostly due to limited tankage. Let me know if you need particular information, like marinas that were wonderful and those that were not so much.

We take the trip and and back from the Chesapeak to the Cape Cod Canal or close parts every summer. I can help with more information once you provide me with more of yours

Re: Maine to Chesapeake Fall Passage

Thank you for the responses. I am trying to decide if should come down the coast or head straight from Camden to Cape Cod Canal in one hop.

My boat is about ready to be put up for the winter. If I make the passage, I need to get started shortly.

My sailing experience is mostly limited to Penobscot Bay though I have taken piloting classes in Annapolis and in Boston. I have been in VA for a few years now. Each fall I have thought about bringing the boat down and then reason takes over.

I have not done any offshore sailing and am thinking of a small crew of 2-3. Some have suggested hiring a captain and taking the whole trip offshore. Absent that, I am thinking I would start with day hops.

My time estimate with day hops is close to three weeks. Assuming the weather cooperated, what kind of timeframe could I expect?

Thanks!

We too have done it. I agree with Phil - get Eldridge Tide & Pilot Book.

Also Cape Cod canal yes

As well as go through Annisquam River, not around the outside of Cape Ann (42 Deg 39 min 28 sec North - 70 deg 41 min 03 sec W)

This "might" be of help - it was our trip in the opposite direction.
