has anyone heard of a Luger

3 Attachment(s)
I have been boating for years and finally came to my senses. So I found a wrecked 1977 Luger Tradewinds, overhauled it, and taught myself to sail. As I approch the end of my 1st season of sailing I have yet to see another Luger boat. The only stuff I have found on the net has been negative yet I'm having a fantastic time and have had no problems. Please keep in mind that I sail out of Buffalo on lake Erie so I dont see any big water.

They were sold as hull & deck kits, I believe, and so are mostly going to be owner-finished and therefore highly variable in quality and fit-out.

Simply not mainstream/production boats. Could be you have a good one, enjoy it!!

No idea of the actual numbers out there.. would be interesting to know how many were sold.

There seems to be an owners' site:

IIRC Lugers were sold without the 1/2's of the hull even bonded together - truly a "kit" boat. :)

When you say Lake Erie is not big water, I have to disagree. One of the worst storms I ever went through was the Mills Race which was a night race out of Toledo to Put In Bay. Nasty and very scary. We raced a C & C 35 with 6 experienced crew and we were all glad to finish in one piece!

I had a Luger Leeward (16') for a couple of months. When the wind kicked up the hull flexed quite a bit and I quickly sold it for something more solid with ballast. The larger Lugers (like yours) are less common than say an O'day or Catalina, but there are tons of Luger Leewards in lake country (just search your local craigslist).

All that matters is you enjoy the boat and have confidence in it. Sweet looking boat.

I have a 27' Tradewinds that I have sailed for 6 years. Know you boat and what it can handle and what you can. I have had mine in some conditions that I should not have but it held up ok. I have only sailed in the ocean in this boat on the coast of NC and SC. Its a fun boat and the drop keel sure makes it easy in this area...

Like every one else said she was a kit boat I think that she was built complete and or kit hual and deck. They look like like a nice boat back in the day. I hope you love and take care or her.
