Sailing characteristics ?

So, in you folks opinion, how would you describe the sailing characteristics of a 33 or 36 hunter vs a Catalina such as a 31 or 35.5. Yes just got back from Annapolis.

And thanks for any insight.

Leaning more toward tan or yellow?

I don't know squat about Hunters but I sail a Catalina 310. It is wide at the beam, has a wing keel, actually points fairly well, but doesn't like dead down wind with waves following.

I think your question is really way too broad to get a better answer than that.

Annapolis was fun, lots of pretty boats, lots of less than pretty.

I would say it is like sailing a bathtub vs sailing a barge....

Funny comments, but a bit harsh! Yes these are beamy coastal cruisers which will not perform like a more race oriented boat. That said, skip the roller furling main and opt for the deep keel and the Catalinas will be decent performers.

Why don't you ask the brokers to take you out for a spin so you can tell us?;)

Yes, Bob Perry is the man. But still, the OP deserved a better answer. This isn't the same as someone who comes in asking "I want to sail. What boat should I buy?" He's seen a few of the current production sailboats at the boat show, hasn't sailed them, and is asking for info and impressions from those who have or who know.

True, and true. And I won't be the one to do that. However, more specificity from the OP would tend to breed more specificity from the responders. For example how would the Hunter 36-2 deep keel (HUNTER 36-2 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com
) compare to the Catalina 35.5 deep keel (Yachts and boats for sale - Catalina Yachts) in terms of motion in a rough seaway, and ultimate survivabilty in a storm?
