Re: Team Oracle Boat Capsizes

Jesus, 6 pages over a capsize

Racing boats or cars when driven to the limit sometimes go over the limit. You can only find the limits in a new boat with some broaches and knock downs. These guys are racers not cruisers, walking on the limit is their profession.

Ok these boats have a nasty tendency to pitch pole at speed and that is dangerous. I bet they will be revising the design in what regards that, but if you don't go to the limit you will never find out that there is a problem...and you may find it only on the big race.

Meanwhile stay with this song

Re: Team Oracle Boat Capsizes

In a previous post, I said to my untrained eye, the foils seemed primitive. Latitude 38 just printed an article in which they say that prior to the 72 pitch pole, someone asked Coutts (apparently Coutts has an engineering degree) if the foils shouldn't articulate. He replied that they would be fine (or as they say down under - "She'll be right mate"). She ain't "right or fine" anymore!

Re: Team Oracle Boat Capsizes

The folks who get involved on these boats know exactly what they're getting into. Most of them probably do it just for the danger much like a lot of other dangerous sports. You wouldn't want to tell a downhill skier he/she has to go back to hickory rigetops I think these cats are a terrific thing for sailing, for technology, and for international competition. It's nostalgic to look back at going over to Newport to see the 12m monos bobbing around in Block Island Sound but it was never nearly as exciting as it must be to watch these rigs. Yahoooo.

Did Oracle fix the thing? I don't follow very closely.

Jeanneau 54DS

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

Seems like they are waiting for the second 72 to be completed. Saw the Forty Fives on the bay today. Here is an interesting article from the AC site regarding the design of the NZ 72. Note the implication of more volume in the bow and more rigidity between hulls. They have sailed 15 days, some apparently in stiff breezes. Oracle only made it to 8.
Hmmmm.

Re: Team Oracle Boat Capsizes

The link above has parts of it being salvaged to make a novelty airplane. What a hoot. It must be a difficult engineering challenge to get torsional rigidity between the two hulls in something that big, cutting edge laminate construction to be sure. It's no 16' Hobie.

The new wing just shipped from NZ. Will be here early January.
Good thing "we've" got deep pockets, AKA: Uncle Larry!
Maybe he will buy some auto inflatable PFDs for the bow and masthead (or what ever you call the top of a wing) as well!
Wonder what it costs just to ship that thing from Auckland?!
