The one who dies with the most sailing trips, wins. (for me canoe and kayak trips count too)

Wow. That's the most insightful, well written piece on sailing that I've read in a long time. Well spoken!

When we sail, the wind noise is often louder than the motor. That's when it gets fun.

I'm in agreement with the OP, but bear in mind that people who like to sail make up less than 1% of the population, even in areas near navigable waters. That seems to indicate the herd needs a lotta thinnin'.

Well, I'm glad there are so many morons out there, 'cause IMHO there are already more than enough sailors...

Why anyone really wants to see MORE people out on the water, really is a mystery to me... (grin)

Smack

Well said!

I unfortunately have not yet experienced all you describe - I'm stuck inland and only get the lake sailing piece of the fun.
That said, when days like yesterday comes along - 17 to 18 kt winds with gusts to >20 - I can not get on the water early enough.
The upside - winds like this is considered storm conditions on the lake - All the stinboaters are gone and you have the lake to yourself....

There's just not enough of these days....

Being a sailor and being a moron are not mutually exclusive. Sometimes my moronity supersedes my sailorness.

..because that, presumably, would mean less of them here, stuck in front of their keyboards, typing away responses to threads on Sailnet.

Now, there's an interesting topic of study: Is it as dangerous to type/text and sail as it is to type/text and drive?!? Might be some rather enjoyable research funding in that.

"Sorry, Officer. Yes, I know I should have been keeping a proper lookout, but I was asking my friends on Sailnet what the best sheeting angle is for the wind strength and..."
