Re: Dumb things I've done

The first time I tied up my first 20 footer I tied it to pilings instead of the float. We have up to a 15' tidal range here.

By the time I was tidied up and ready to leave the boat, the mooring lines were steel bar taut and I had to cut them away.

Dumb things I've done

Blew a mast off a 420 in 20 kts. Good thing it wasn't my boat. Temple U's boat. They weren't happy.

Flipped a laser in the Hudson in Albany in late October.... In no wind.

Set the hook off Salem Nuclear plant in the Delaware, wrapped the rode around the keel, and was cast adrift at 0300.... Without a chart.

Dumb things I've done

Now you guys have me going..... Have I told you how I ripped the bow pulpit off my dad's Catalina 27?

Or about the time I hit a mid-channel buoy in the dark (awesome navigation)?

Re: Dumb things I've done

Situation: Went out to test the engines after some minor adjustments and fuel fitler replacement. Both died within minutes of each other, between 2 rock jetties, in crosswind, of course. Got the anchor down really fast both times without harm. While it's great to have an anchor well secured, it's also great thing to have handy; mine is on the windlass and chain locked, but the lock comes off fast.

Removed the engine covers. Primed. Tried to restart. Considered what I might have done wrong. Started thinking about towing her back with the tender.

Solution. Open fuel valve.

___________

Did this twice. No harm. Smarter now... I think.
