Re: Garbage Island

This is a truck load of the trash a few of us collected in a few hours time last spring on a remote windward beach on Oahu HI. A lot of the trash was fishing gear, stuff whales and props get tangled in. Most of this trash probably came from thousands of miles away, Hawaii snags a lot of the Pacific Gyre trash.

Re: Garbage Island=what we saw, when and where.

This video shows what we saw between 8AM and 11AM on July 12th and where we were in relation to the gyre (Garbage patch) and the projected tsunami debris field.

Thanks for the video. So what happened once you hit the zone of Tsunami trash?
Regards

Bigger chunks and more of it. We talked to other cruisers in Alaska who said they saw some of the things you have heard of - swamped boats, floating dock sections etc. We did not see anything like that.

Our YT channel consists mainly of the daily video logs from our trips so we will upload a day by day record of what we saw and did as we always do. Not trying to pimp my channel but I think this particular video is appropriate to the discussion and I think that is important.

There will be more videos featuring a lot of junk in the water but I won't post them here. People who want to see them know where to find them without me cluttering up sailnet with videos of us sailing through floating trash day after day. I think I have made my point.

vega: the glassy seas, reflecting the sky, rolling in a way to make the mirrored clouds appear like they're in a fun-house.... just beautiful.

Yes, and it helps that Laura is pretty good with a camera.

Re: Garbage Island

The "stuff" seems to come from three sources:

Lost fishing gear
Garbage from various sources
Tsunami debris

That was my impression this summer.
