I picture him dripping wet wearing a PFD clutching his VHF on a Greyhound enroute home.

Re: $158 ebay sailboat heads to sea

So let me get this straight, he splurges ($158.0) on a boat (sight unseen), arranges travel (Greyhound) to retrieve her, provisions her (bologna and cheese), updates her communication network (hand held vhf) and sets off to travel the ICW because as he states 'he had sailed to Europe as a kid and that gave him enough experience to pass a sailing class.' I mean really, who are we to judge if we've never been in his shoes. That would be like trying to tell someone they're not a pilot after they bought a ticket, got a ride to the airport, ate a meal on the plane and actually took the flight somewhere.

I liked how he thought he could just sail a boat he paid 158 for form Connecticut to Florida, with just a few bologna sandwiches and not even have to do a few repairs. His wife should just stay in the Philippines.
What kills me is that there's someone for everyone, except me I guess In my imagination it's a 26 year old smokin hot 5' tall tiny Philippina too.

I will say that when I bought my boat, a 71 year old stripped out project. I motored it from Olympia to Seattle with like zero prep.

For example, I thought about checking the fuel level, but then just decided it was too much trouble. So I had no clue how much diesel I had.

BUT...

two days prior I upped my boat US to 'unlimited' '
I took a 5 gallon jug of diesel with me just in case.
Had foulies, GPS with charts on it cell phone with GPS and charts on it and a Handheld VHF
Had all of the legal requirements, PFDs flares etc. and an air horn for the bridges in seattle.

And.

It's frikken south puget sound in the middle of summer and I actually do have some experience on boats. I also cast off shortly after Dawn so I would have some daylight 'just in case'

I thought I was pretty reckless but jeeze.

$158 for a sail boat. Just to make a buck some guys will do anything, including putting them self in danger. What a fool.

And eating bologna sandwiches.

It was also interesting that he was "anchored" in 120 feet of water- probably with 100 feet of polypropylene line and a mushroom anchor.

Actually, I don't mind him buying a $158 sailboat. But why has to travel to CT from Tx to get the boat.

Don't have boats in Tx for free.

Ignorance is bliss

But when those seas built to four feet it was pretty much all over.

Re: $158 ebay sailboat heads to sea

Hey, the guy did have sense enough to have a VHF with him.....

I can understand the cheap boat, the trip from Tx - mind you, the bus ticket was nearly double the boat price, the no preparing, the shake down at night, even the achoring in 120' water,
but dammit, bologna and cheese???
He must be an idiot...

Re: $158 ebay sailboat heads to sea

@msmith: yeah, the anchored in 120' of water made me do a quick, "so he has a 600' rode aboard? no way."

...but apparently he did have enough proverbial rope to hang himself.

Re: $158 ebay sailboat heads to sea

It was the bus ticket part I didn't understand. I mean that's southwest airlines country, ain't it? It would almost certainly be cheaper to fly, but maybe he thought it would be too dangerous?
