USS Enterprise CVN-65 decoms today

Today is truly the end of an era. At 1300, we decommission the USS Enterprise, our first nuclear powered aircraft carrier. After a distinguished 51 year career, she moves off into history. Fellow veterans, should you think about her tonight, raise a toast to the grand old lady and those who served on her.

I will be one of some 15,000 people at the ceremony -- I doubt there will be a dry eye in the place.

I made two cruises to the Golf of Tonkin on her around 1966 to 1968 as an IC man and got to see her pull intp Norfork VA when the wife and I were cruising in 1999. I will miss
following her on the news reports.

I made a West-Pac on the Kitty Hawk '77/'78. Enterprise was our relief. Talk about 2 BIG ships passing in the night. Wow, 35 years ago. I am old....

Saw her near Hawaii, maybe in Pearl Harbor, in the mid 80s right after the superstructure change. I didn't believe it was the Big E until I saw the fantail.

I read today they have sold her to a Chinese toaster company.
Soon, every morning for breakfast you can have a little slice from her.

Re: USS Enterprise CVN-65 decoms today

Sad day. She will live on in Star Trek reruns though.

Re: USS Enterprise CVN-65 decoms today

A year ago, almost to the day, I motorsailed past the Enterprise in Norfolk on the newly commissioned Zanshin enroute to the Caribbean; she is an impressive sight even at rest and was instrumental in making the world the place it is today.
