Re: Maps of Marinas

@sailortjk1, I can tell you and I have shared some of the same experiences. I once boated around in the wee hours one night/morning looking for a slip I'd reserved. The office told me, second on the left, you can't miss it. An hour later I gave up.

Totally agree that there isn't a book, that's why I think I'm going to start making an online resource. That way, before you set out on a voyage, you can print off all the maps you might need and have them to hand.

Re: Maps of Marinas

Reeds Nautical Almanac (paper and ipad) has harbor charts for the U.K. and I assume that their (much cheaper) Harbour Guide does as well. They used to have East and West Coast Almanacs for North America but they are out of print and I'm not sure if they contained Marina Maps. A U.S. equivalent would certainly be useful.

Compiling a guide is big undertaking - consider creating a framework that allows others to submit maps (you might also invite all the Marinas to contribute).

Good Luck

Maps of Marinas

Some marinas have slip maps on their web site.

Re: Maps of Marinas

I always referred to Brian Fagan's Guide, there is a line drawing for most harbors with fuel and other spots noted.
The Cruising Guide to Central and Southern California: Golden Gate to Ensenada, Mexico, Including the Offshore Islands: Brian Fagan: 0639785801825: Amazon.com: Books The Cruising Guide to Central and Southern California: Golden Gate to Ensenada, Mexico, Including the Offshore Islands: Brian Fagan: 0639785801825: Amazon.com: Books

And a waterproof chartbook
WPB Los Angeles to San Diego inc Ensenada, Mexico, 1st Ed.
But the last few years I just punch the info buttons on the gps to bring up any detail including phone numbers and charts.
And The Log does an updated guide every year that helps find stuff.

Very much my thinking re. allowing others to submit. The more I think about this idea, the more valuable I think it would be.

Re: Maps of Marinas

Library is up but far from full so, if you'd like to contribute a map, please email to Dale@TheMarinersGuide.com. It's only been up a few days and has been getting a decent amount of looks every day (even today, surprisingly). It's also had several contributors and downloads so I guess some boaters finding it useful. You can see it for yourself at TheMarinersGuide.com, click on Marina Maps at the top left.

I've noticed this also. Seems to me that they would look at it as free advertising to submit a property map, not to mention possibly reducing the number of "lost souls" wandering around the marina confines looking for that elusive slip or fuel dock. If you are creating a website database and have good contact info, maybe the sailnet crowd could request their particular marina to email you a digital copy of their map. I'm not sure if it would be considered copyrighted, but it may not hurt to ask for a release to avoid problems down the road. It's a really good idea you have.

Re: Maps of Marinas

@ Dean101, thanks, mate. Personally, I always seem to come into a strange marina when it's night, cold, raining and I'm tired as hell, so the last thing I want to do is cruise up and down the rows looking for the transient slip or the pump out or the fuel dock. Hopefully other mariners will find this useful too. Based on the amount of traffic thus far, looks like they are. I'm going to link to bobwebster's printable noaa chart too because that's a fantastic resource he's built. Open to any suggestions anyone has to improve it.
