Re: Pearson 303

I just bought my Pearson 303 in August after an extensive 5 months of looking at Catalina 30s, Pearson 26,30, Sabre 28 and stumbled upon the 303 by accident. Ended up purchasing her 300 nautical miles away. Sailed/motored home in 6 days. She is not a racer, but sails real well on a reach and will point well with good sails and trim. All my lines lead to the cockpit for easy single handling. Some minor weather helm 16+knots but that is easily remedied by easing the sheets.

Problems: Working on the stuffing box is cramped. Wear gloves to protect the knuckles. Engine is a little under powered, but will push the boat 5knts at 2000rpm.

Re: Pearson 303

How are things going with your new 303? I am looking at on my lake and would appreciate any insights you may have. The boat looks pretty good but im sure the side decks have wet core. Are you happy with your purchase?

The only wet core I found was on the starboard chainplate. I drilled holes to dry the core and filled using the West Epoxy method. There was some damp core around the rear pulpit but no rot. I removed pulpit and let dry and it looks good. I love this boat but the only complaint I have is that the main sheet traveler is in the cockpit on my boat and takes up what little room there is in this cockpit. I might look to sell it for this very reason. With 4 people no problem but if you want a few more friends along for the sail in the safety of the cockpit then a boat with a bigger cockpit is in your future as is in mine.

Good luck with your search and make sure to test for damp/rotten cores yourself by tapping the deck hard and quick (not so hard you damage it) looking for dead spots.
