New bottom coating perhaps?
 
I ran across this, and naturally it made me wonder how well it would repel bottom growth. I bet it would really benefit racers as well. Neat stuff, it'd be sweet if it could work with no more traditional bottom paint needed (so you could actually paint the bottom like the hull and topsides)..

I recently read about this product somewhere else and thought of the same thing. I would be concerned about durability, since the video indicates it is susceptible to abrasion. How long would it last?

I believe it is reasonably pricy, too.

From the FAQ:

"Can you use Ultra-Ever Dry where it is continuously submerged in water or liquid, like the inside of a pipe with constantly flowing liquid?
No, this is not a good application. The reason is the nano-coating relies on a barrier of oxygen/air to form the bar- rier on the surface of the material it is coating. Unless the coating can become exposed to air every now and then, it cannot “recharge”. So coating the inside of continuously flowing pipes is not a prime application. If it is intermittent usage, it may work well. Steel coated with Ultra-Ever Dry has been immersed in salt water for 30 days without any effect."

From the FAQ and other things I'm reading - it would look to be an interesting experiment for classes that are frequently pulled out of the water. I'm thinking it might be worth a test for the Lasers, Finns, etc to see if this hydophobic stuff is advantageous. Durability seems to be questionable amongst most the reviews of hydrophobic sprays on the market (UltraEverDry is not the only one).

This video shows how the stuff keeps a thin film of "air" between it and the water, which implies the friction coefficient of the surface (at least in water) is going to be vastly reduced.

On the other hand, the stuff is VERY expensive and quite toxic. Like quite a few anti-foul recipes, I'm betting if this proves advantageous - the environmental agency of some countries are going to start looking to see how bad it affects their marine environment.

Here are the thoughts that ran through my mind as I watched the video:

Hardness rating? Brittleness? How clear is this actual coating? If we put it on glass, what are its refractive properties? How does it filter natural light? Is it transparent to UV? Depending on the answers, coating windshields might be a good answer. How about coating eisenglass?

Granted, it is hydrophobic and oleophobic, but what does it react with, and what are the byproducts? Does it release aerosols 1. when applied, 2. after application and curing? If so, what are they? Is this stuff that is safe for humans to be around indoors?

I strongly suspect that something evolved from the super-hydrophobic materials will eventually be the future of bottom paints. The current stuff might work on day-launched vessels (though maybe not trailerables due to abrasions concerns).

Based upon the statement of "coated steel submerged for 30 days", I suspect that offshore racing boats would do OK since they sail frequently in conditions that would aerate (most of?) the hull. Then it becomes a matter of durability. Most cruising sailors, not so much...
