Insurance Issues

We currently have full coverage on our boat, and have decided to shop for coverage in other places. Our agent is very ill and is a friend which was the primary reason we remained where we are. We would have changed before now if not for him as the service has wained. That is not a good reason for sure, but that is the way we are.

We have no issues which would raise a flag to any company concerning our personal histories, no law suits, bankruptcy, accidents or claims what so ever, even outside the marine arena.

We started looking around and were surprised when few wanted our business. The cost every where is quite an increase over what we are paying now for minimal coverage. Times being what they are we decided to try the just liability route, as our policy has doubled in the last year. We have had two companies refuse to even write liability. The boat is old, 1977, and I can understand the difficulty in finding full coverage, especially at a reasonable price, but have always thought that securing liability would never be a problem as long as our record was clean.

Has the market tightened up, and has anyone experienced similar difficulties? Full coverage is nice but liability is essential especially when cruising and moving about.
