Wing sail - new and revolutionary, or is it?

For those of you who watch America's Cup, you most likely remember how the BMW Oracle trimaran used for the first time wing sail and won the race. It was then called "new revolutionary design"....or was it?

Take a look at this black and white video from 1938. Yes, 1938. It shows ice boat races in Eastern Prussia (now Poland). Now, fast forward to approximately 03:15...what do you see? Incredible...

This thread should, perhaps, go into the off-topic section, but I figured it is so close to sailing it will go here. I have seen some modern ice boats, but never one with steering wheel with tilt :-)

The XV iceyacht with wheel steering is still an active class.


Don't know if the statement "Eastprussia, the home of icesailing" is historically correct, it's a German propaganda film made in occupied Poland in 1941.

Netherlands also have a long history of sailing on ice-
Look at the nice "Boat" flying the flag of Netherlands in the video above

Ice boats are definitely sailing -- fast on hard water. Historically, when the world was colder, the Hudson was a major ice boating center. I believe there still is ice boating on the upper Hudson.

DN Ice Yacht is the largest active class with sailors on both sides of the Atlantic
The world Championship is alternating between North America and Northern Europe.

Are there ice cruisers that you can use for a tour of the Hudson. I really prefer a bit more beam in my boat.
