Congratulations on the boat!! Best of luck with her.

Generally, you can find a wide spectrum of cost for delivery Captains. Rightly, a Bay delivery should cost less than open water, as it requires different experience levels. The two guys that I've used are terrific. They are highly experienced and shuttle several boats per year back and forth to the Caribbean (direct and often skipping Bermuda) Their rates are $400/dy for the skipper, $250/dy for the mate (both are 100 ton master licensed) and $50/dy for provisions. You also need to pay to get them to/from the boat, but they'll drive if they can.

You often get what you pay for. I also know a 20 something local bartender with his 50 ton who will work for $150/dy in cash on a coastal delivery. He is rail meat on some serious racing yachts, but knows his way around a sailboat. He brings his girlfriend for a set of hands. You decide who you would rather have.

I only provide these costs for reference, as I'm sure you can find someone closer and save a ton of travel expense. I also think a 100ish mile Bay delivery should only require one licensed Captain and an unlicensed mate, who would cost very little.

I agree with Chef, if you are going to break out the wallet and pay, I would gulp and have her taken all the way home. While it will set you back a bit more, you'll get the boat home and have more free vacation/personal time to shake her down. The skipper will also have gotten to know her a bit and will be able to give you a good debrief on what is working properly. I hate to say it, but expect something to break, whether you deliver her or pay someone else.

No matter which you do, expect a lot of motoring. Coastal delivery captains don't usually goof around with tacking and jibing and significantly extending a trip. They sail on a stiff beam reach, otherwise, they motor sail at best. It's probably in your interest, as the fuel will cost less than they do.

Just got back and settled. As I price out the cost of me getting to D'ville, and dropping off a car, etc., I'm looking at easily $400-500, in part because the closest place that rents a vehicle is uHaul (they also happen to be the least expensive, at $180 plus tax, plus $35 for insurance, etc.). Add in the cost of fuel (easily $60), and I'm already at $275 (not including taxes and other fees). But then I have to get from the uHaul place to the marina - tack on at least another $25 for a taxi. Then, depending on the weather, it may make more sense to stay at the local hotel, since the uHaul place is also on the wrong side of a very narrow, windy bridge from the marina (but on the same side as the hotel). I'm not usually scared of bridges, but I'm not sure, even with insurance, that I like the idea of driving a large vehicle (uHaul only rents their trucks for interstate trips) across that bridge if its windy. So, if I chicken out (or, put another way, if I decide to stay safe!) I can add on another $200 for hotel rooms, which puts me at $500. I'm told some of the captains in the area charge about $300 a day for a bay delivery. In the end, that may be the way to go. I need to be in DC for work this coming week, so it would be really handy if the boat was already in that area. I need to look into this a little more.

Seems complicated...Much less so when sailing down to Deltaville than driving down there

Your original plan where your wife dropped you off and a few off for the initial trip up the Bay was less complcated. As you leave it in a marina on the way up you will keep incurring costs major storage costs and still have to travel far to get to it.

Your initial plan to get it to the top of the Bay or two days outside to its final home still seems less complicated and less expensive overall. The time you spend cleaning is great, but now you need to get her home.

One shot to the boat...two or three day trip. Pretty straightforward. A captain can bring it up to Rock Hall in one long day or take her to Banegat in 2. Keep it simple Less complicated , les stress, les variables, less expense....Just saying

Chef is right. Pay a Captain to take her on the outside when the right weather window presents itself and get your boat all the way home. It seems like you can stay where you are for free until that window presents itself.

You are going to have to leave her at a slip or mooring when you leave her and that is going to really add up, especially if you get bad weather and she stays somewhere for a week. The more you need that not to happen, the more likely it will happen. That's a law of passage making.

X10, KISS works well.
Actually I prefer Annapolis either pick up the mooring ball or drop anchor. Water taxi and public transportation are there.

I think the folks on this thread are giving you good advice about a captain bringing her up to Barnegat. Then you can work on her and learn her at your pace vs. drinking from a fire hose.

This is why I love coming here. Thank you all for the great feedback! I understand the "firehose" comment completely, but I really want to do part of the delivery. I see it as a great way for me to learn the boat, and to get more comfortable with her. By the time I'm done, I'll have sailed the Chesapeake, Delaware River, the Atlantic Ocean, and Barnegat Bay, and I will ALMOST have done the little "great loop" around Delaware/MD. If all goes well, I think it will go a long way toward giving me more confidence with her.

That being said, getting to Deltaville is a pain, and the stupid issue of getting to the marina is frustrating (no car rental places within almost 20 miles, no taxi services near there, etc.). I'm still working on all of that, and will likely just wind up driving my car down there and leaving it at the marina, then going back at some point and picking it up, or finding someone to drive it North for me. If I could find someone to move the boat up to Annapolis/Rock Hall/etc. at a price that's close to my projected cost to DIY (which is surprisingly more than I had originally anticipated), then that would be great. The prices mentioned here are higher than I had hoped, though, so it's looking like that probably won't be an option.

Sorry, I know I tend to ramble and overthink things! But it's funny how often someone picks up on something and comes up with great suggestions, and I HATE when I learn that I missed an option that would have made more sense.
