$12,000 for a dream sailboat is a reasonable goal. Congrats on keeping sites.

Interest rates are low and tax deductible on a boat with a head/galley. Have enough of a down payment so the payments are more than manageable and still pay extra on the principle...not much different that saving when you do the math.

In my situation, The interest is so low after the tax break that it's really not worth if for me to pay more on the principle... better for me to invest more. YMMV.

There is nothing better than owning something outright, I congratulate you on have the strength to say no to instant gratification. Your sacrifice will be rewarded the day you purchase the boat you really want and not have the albatross of a payment hanging over you. I currently have a boat I really like, in a slip for the first time and don't owe owe a dime on any of it all the while saving for the boat I really want and the trip I want to take, the Great American Loop in a 32 footer.
