Opinion on cove stripes

Thought I'd get some sail net folks take on indented cove stripes. I notice around our harbor that a lot hulls with indented cove stripes, like our C&C don't seem to repaint these and just paint them the same as the hull. Ours do not look so good. The nifty little C&C star is totally gone and the rest of the cove is faded or mostly missing. I'm deciding whether to just remove what's left or bother buying a can of paint in a color I'll never use anywhere else on the boat. We do have the name of the boat on the hull, where the stripe appears interrupted for just this purpose, so i feel like without the stripe it just looks like a bumper sticker on the hull.

Re: Opinion on cove stripes

Perhaps I'm biased, but a boat fabricated with indented cove stripes usually does look better with them painted a contrasting colour.

Back in the 'old days' they used gold leaf...

Did mine with white 3M striping tape. Looks great and really made the hull colour pop.

My friend...your hull colour would "pop" on a moonless night. So very unique and pretty.

Re: Opinion on cove stripes

I'm a fan of vinyl for the cove stripe, especially when indented. Paint for the boot.

If you don't have the steady hand/eye to get it straight, I find this to be one of the least expensive things to pay a pro to do.

Re: Opinion on cove stripes

On one of my boats , a wood cutter built in 1932 , I sanded away the gold leaf cove line & painted international orange against a dark frigate green hull . I thought it looked sharp , but the previous owner lost his mind . His perspective was that the cove line was the designer's signature & never to be altered in any way .

Re: Opinion on cove stripes

I would vote to paint or vinyl the cove but, definitely color it.

Re: Opinion on cove stripes

With vinyl, you can easily change the color before you need to paint again.
