Life Raft and Delivery Captain

Does any delivery captains supply their life raft if the boat they are delivering does not have one?

I don't mind to buy my own since I need one sooner or later. May be one of those 4-person softpack. I assume that I can check in at the airport, or I have to ship ground via UPS. ???

Is it a joke?

For voyages like these:

Norfolk to BVI, Bermuda, Bahamas (outside)
Norfolk to Block Island (outside)
South Fl to Central America
Key West to Texas

I have done most of them above without life raft, it was risk for me. I choose not to do it if I can avoid. If any boat owners so insensitive to the safety of their crews, we are not on the same level at all.

I guess you must have problems when the delivery captain shows up with his PFD, tether and PLB. This is absurd.

rent it.

also, the CO2 cartridges can't be checked at airports. not sure how you would remove the cartridge on many of them. and then getting the right sizes at the destination.

I am not sure if the size of cartridge is the determinating factor. I carry my auto inflate PFD onto the plane all the time and never have any problems.

You have to ship via ground and also incur the hazardous material surcharge since the raft will have both a CO2 cylinder and flares. If you're worried, pack a personal EPIRB and an exposure suit. Those should be fine on the plane, plus they're light in weight. If you have crew, they're on their own.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the flares.

A personal EPIRB and an exposure suit are good viable option.

Re: Life Raft and Delivery Captain

I would ask the owner to supply the liferaft and make sure that it is current.

While you at at it, make sure all necessary safety equipment is aboard and current.

Re: Life Raft and Delivery Captain

Just so happens the boat I'm on now, I brought my own Winslow along, but it's the first time I've ever done so... Only because I had to bring so much other crap anyway, and will be driving back home from FL, so it's just one more thing to toss in the car... Even though this has just been a coastal trip, the water up north was pretty chilly, and with no tender aboard, what the hell...

For an offshore passage, however, I'd say it's the responsibility of the owner... And, if the boat isn't already fitted with a raft, it might serve as a red flag that the boat may in other respects not be completely/properly prepped for the trip at hand...

Inflatable PFDs have a specific exception from TSA (read the "prohibited items" list - you should have a copy printed in your carry-on on top of your PFD. The exception does not apply to rafts, carry-on or checked.
