COsts of short distance sailboat transport

Hi,
This has probably been done to death, but I wondered what sort of costs I would probably incur for transporting a 28' sailboat about 20km? I've found one locally which is a project, and want to work out if it's worth movign over to my house to get fixed up. It's not got a trailer, so I'd have to get a specialist with a trailer that would be able to lift it on and off, or get a crane in - I just have no experience of such things...

I've asked a shipper, but not heard back, and due to the price, time is of the essence. Can you help give me an idea? Would $500 be reasonable? It's probably a morning's work for a hauler.

Thanks

Distance is not the main cost but lifting and dropping are, once loaded $ per mile is quite low.

$500 might be a bargain -- but I don't think anyone here knows the geographic location -- is it winter or summer in your part of the world, what is road quality or congestion en route, boat displacement (weight), whether it is in the water or not, beam, whether wide load rules or any movement restrictions apply, keel type, whether it's an easy type to build a cradle for, whether the mast is currently stepped and whether deck or keel stepped, whether there are any self-service facilities for preparing the boat to be moved (such as a publicly available boat lift or mast crane)? Also, is the boat's condition good enough to justify a perhaps larger investment in moving it than you might be anticipating? Do you have salty or mechanically handy friends who could help you weld up a cradle and prep the boat for movement?

When you say time is of the essence, is there some particular pressure on you to move the boat quickly in order to have a purchase deal?

The better question is how you're planning on blocking it once the boat is at your home. Do you have jackstands? The mover I used (excellent, by the way, and I can PM you their contact info if you're anywhere near NJ) charged $500 to move the boat about 50 miles, and used a hydraulic trailer to lift the boat off the jackstands when he "picked up" the boat, and she was grabbed by a TraveLift to be placed in the water. In your case, on the "delivery" side, you'll need jackstands or the like to be maneuvered into place once the trailer has the boat where you want her. The stands are positioned, and then the hydraulic arms are pulled down, letting the boat rest on the stands. I've seen it done, and it doesn't seem TOO terribly hard, but if it's your first time you might want to find someone with a lot more experience to help you. The last thing you want is a toppled-over boat sitting in your driveway.

From where to where?... Are you in the lower mainland yet?

Yup, that's why I posted here. Anyhow, it's a moot point: the boat was being advertised for $500 on Craigslist, and it wasn't worth a penny more! I wouldn't have taken it as a free gift, but I had to go and look. Got a little excited, that's all... (deep breath...) :o

Buy a boat trailer.
That will solve a lot of problems long term.
