Re: Heading to the Keys!

C.Dad is right, skip dry tortugas.

its actually harder than going to bimini. -in Bimini you can buy fuel, ice /water. there is zip in Dry tortugas.

Ft Myers is a good resupply point, as is Marco island. from marco, not much till marathon.

you're going to need to go around cape romano, so everglades city might be back tracking... but new turkey key would be a good stop, or shark river. once you leave shark river, no stopping places till long key/marathon.

and you want to sail there. too many lobster / crab bouys (til the end of march) to motor... (IMHO).

you're going to need some bug screens at shark river... or at least a head net. worst at sunset / sunrise. put them up before the wind dies! (or else).

mosquitoes are nothing compared to no seeums (sand fleas). skin so soft will coat your skin so the sand fleas dont bite.. (or oil based sunscreen).

Re: Heading to the Keys!

Hello again,Make sure you steer clear of Cape San Blas..... I normally steer straight to Tarpon Springs (Anclote key) and stop there if I need supplies. It is a quiet little Greektown that you can tie up at the city dock right on the strip.check out the belly dancers.... From there south I usually follow the coastline in less than 10fathoms because I travel with my six-year-old daughter I like to be able to anchor to get sleep.
We are now approximately 20 miles north of Marathon in Florida Bay anchored and fishing!

Re: Heading to the Keys!

Hey y'all! Made it to Panama Yesterday morning. Great sail all the way. Overnighter, 16 hours or so. Wind from the southwest had us on a great tack consistently. Averaged about 5.5 knots. Water Pump on the engine started leaking trying to motor into the channel. We changed out the impeller and gasket ring thingy to no avail. Got a tow into Treasure Island Marina where we may be for a week waiting out storms. Then onto Tampa!

Tarpon Springs sounds incredible!!! I am definitely pushing for that!

Re: Heading to the Keys!

Hello again, glad to hear you made it, the reason I normally follow the coast line from Pensacola Panama City although it has a slight bend the current is normally with you. There are plenty of parts in Panama City for your water pump. I recommended the most economical place to buy it in earlier post. You probably need a seal, however I would check the shaft before replacing the seal.
I'm still offshore in Florida Bay. This is a great place to go exploring with the dink. Lots of little islands and mostly shallow water great fishing. Probably going to go into port Monday or Tuesday. Then I will take a rental car to Panama City to get my truck and motorcycle........
I will look you up if you're still there..... in the meantime enjoy grand-lagoon and Panama City Beach.

Re: Heading to the Keys!

Hey y'all!

Just got into Panama City from Pensacola. Thought I'd give a lil' excerpt from the blog.

Cheers

3-13-2013: A Cautionary Tale
February 13, sitting out on the lounger on the stern, enjoying the sun. A slightly portly, middle aged gentleman wearing a visor walks down the pier, from the entrance gate of Palafox, carrying a bucket and some other smaller tools. He is heading towards his boat. Half an hour passes. Still lounging on the stern. Still enjoying the sun. The portly middle aged gentleman is shuffling hurriedly across the dock, grumbling profanities loudly to himself. His hand is wrapped in a thick towel. Blood is dripping down his arm. We ask him if he needs help, and if he is all right. He grumbles “I'll make it. I just cut two of my fingers off...” He then continues down the dock, grumbling profanities. He opens the gate, walks to his car, and drives off. Presumably to the hospital.

The following day, the same gentleman was back at the docks hard at work, with some serious surgical wrap around his fingers. He gave us an account of the event; Apparently, he was working with his engine, while it was running, and his fingers slipped into it. The tip of his middle finger was sliced off, hanging by the skin. His index and ring finger were both broken. After composing himself and taking stock of his situation, he decided he had lost all the blood there was to lose, and calmly drove to the hospital. Doctors grafted his fingertip back on, and wrapped it up tight. He is ready to sail to Bimini on Wednesday. Odds are good that we will be crossing paths with him again.

Note to self: Don't stick fingers in the prop when the engine is running
