Re: Boum!!!!

Well, it is a training vessel. Those German cadets got a practical exercise on what CBDR actually looks like in real life.

Very fortunate that the fishing vessel went HARD astern just prior to impact -- this would have ended pretty ugly had he not.

It seems the fishing vessle altered course to starboard right before impact. If they were altering course then there was someone at the helm. Why wouldn't they have just turned to port? Probably misjudged the sailing ship speed (slow), and thought they would pass astern.

Re: Boum!!!!

There are collisions and collisions. Look at a real bad one. After looking at this one I don't think I would moor my boat on a big port anymore

ok.. how do you make that "mistake" not only did they hit a moored vessel.. but they hit the large concrete pier the moored vessel was tied up to.. and not by little.. they were way off course to go around

Re: Boum!!!!

GREETINGS EARTHLINGS The fishing boat was not showing any fishing signals
she was not keeping an effective responsible look-out in accordance to the avoidance of collision at sea regulations. By her sails is showing she is sailing seams sh is the one blowing the warning signal ( more than five short blasts on her whistle) But no one is 100% to blame AS ALWAYS GO SAFE

Pilot: "Engine room, 100rpm please. Helmsman rudder to starboard 30 degrees"
Engine room: "Bridge! Bridge! we have a runaway diesel! We can't stop her!"
Pilot: "Oh $hit!"

For how these boats work and what can go wrong, and how it applies to US in our little boats check out this book. It's short, quite preachy, but defiantly worth a read. It has lots of "scenarios" where he outlines how these ships can, and can't maneuver, and how we can either make a pilot swear at us, or thank us.
