Do you recognise this yacht. WARATAH TWIN KEEL.Tasmania circa 1970's

-This is a yacht my grandfather built between '72 & '74. WARATAH TWIN BILGE KEEL MASTHEAD SLOOP. Built in Thurlstane, Tasmania. Then called ORION 3. When my grandad sold it, it was sailed to King island, Bass strait in the late 70's. Just so you know, i'm registered on multiple forums to post the same question, I have contacted a tourist operator on King isl' and I've contacted MaST (boat registry). So far no luck but if you can help with my search then drop me a line please.

She looks like a fun boat! Glad your Opa got a chance to live out the dream. Good luck finding her!

i can't be sure from your pic but it kindof looks like a boat i saw in the philippines a couple of years ago,at low tide it would remain upright, supported by the twin keels

Well this yacht is one of a kind. Original design was 21ft with a stepped / 2 tier cabin roofline. My opa built his at 23ft with a single level cabin roof. I wouldn't be suprised if it was the one you spotted as my opa sold it in the late 70's, so It could be anywhere by now.

Very cool pictures! I saw that you have the blueprints, so when do you begin to build Orion 4? Good luck on your search, it would be cool if you find her, but being an old plywood boat she will have required much love and care over the past 30 years to have survived... I hope she's still out there somewhere!

Well I know my opa was a consumate professional no matter what he did. I can be sure he did a good job on the build but your right, it would have taken regular care and attention over the years. Of course theres the chance it's rotting in someones yard but I wanna find it either way. I build models from the plans, I'd love to build full size but with todays costs including the ongoing's I'd find it unlikely I'll get round to it. I'd want to build a 60/70ft version anyhow, something I can live on you know. Models are just as much fun and definately easier and cheaper to maintain. Thanks for the message matey.
