Ospreys

Here at the marina is a pair of Ospreys that had been trying to build a nest on top of one of the piles. But as there is no place to jam a couple of twigs into, to get started, they did not have much luck and all it took was a windy day and all their efforts went falling into the river and they had to start from scratch. So I made a frame and scewed it down on top of said piles and now they are having a lot more luck building their new home.

I can see from the great pic. that your help is really appreciated. Nice job and early enough in the year to see their offspring in the Summer.

Re: Ospreys

One of the most magical days we had was watching eagles fish for strippers at reversing falls in Washington county Maine. Seals were hitting on the fish from the mouth of the river and the eagles striking from above . The birds then would bring the schoolies back to their nest in a tree on a small island in the middle of the inlet. No sight or sound of man. ( We got there on a BMW dual sport.) Wife just oo 'd and aaa'd . Stayed until the tide changed and released the fish. Ospreys and eagles are just so majestic. Thanks for bringing up the memory.

As the nest to be is only a few yards from my boat and by going up a few mast steps, I can take pictures of the inside of the nest, I am planning to keep this thread open and update it with new pictures as things happen.

a few yards? Once they get some eggs and fledglings in there.. they are not going to be happy to see you

Nice work! I loved watching the eagles and osprey as we motored out the river in Maine last year. The osprey would like to sit on our mast when we were docked and occasionally we'd find fish heads on the deck as we were getting ready to head out. Small price to pay.

I love to look at them, except when they land on the top of my mast on the wind instruments. From that perch they can survey the bay for fish and swoop down for dinner. Again, I'm an Osprey lover, but they do owe me and one of my neighbors new mast head instruments.

Hope they feel they owe you after this :)

Great pic BTW!

Re: Ospreys

There are a bunch of tall trees around here they use for look out posts and they eat their dinner on the two piles next to the one the nest is on, so I think I am safe on that count.

We have a favorite spot on the Eastern shore where a family of bald eagles have made their nests for a few years now. We enjoy anchoring close buy and watching their activity, especially when they have new chicks like the last two years.

Nice. There are several osprey nests /platforms in Calgary. Some put up by the power company.
