Unbelieveable Easter in BC!

We had record breaking warm temperatures, clear sunshine and near summer conditions for the Easter long weekend in southern BC this year. It's a tradition for our club to rendezvous at one of the Marine parks in the Gulf Islands, this year all told 11 boats make the trek.

Friday was sunny, warm but mostly calm - we did manage to squeeze in a half hour with the kite up, pole on the forestay and trucking straight for our destination but the rest of it was a chug..

A couple of lazy laydays in the park, hiking, kayaking (and a couple of diehards swam in the 49F water

Four boats moved on to Wallace Island, another nearby park for Sunday night.

An early start to catch the slack at Porlier Pass got us going.

Two or three miles into the strait we hooked into a nice 10-14K SE breeze that made for a 6+ knot close reach fetch to English Bay.. and we enjoyed a nice flat water beat the last 5 miles among the freighters.

All in all an amazing weekend.. Tshirts, shorts and sandals at the end of March.. nearly unheard of.

Nice!

I particularly like the photo with boat at a nice angle of heel, all the telltales streaming aft and the knot-meter in view reading 6.2 knots.

Also, I'll have to give Pirates Cove a look-see. Reminds me of Smuggler's Cove on your side of the Straits. Wallace Island is another nice hidey-hole near there, and don't forget North Cove (not a very well know/used spot) for awesome sunsets thanks to the lumber mills near Nanaimo.

I have a sauna on my boat, therefore I win.

Re: Unbelieveable Easter in BC!

Meanwhile, here on the South Coast of Ontario... it snowed today.

Last year, we were in shorts at this time. and the golf courses were open.

This has been one long apathetic winter. It had no interest in ever getting very serious, and has no interest in going away, it has just been months of endless grey blah.

Re: Unbelieveable Easter in BC!

'Twas a nice weekend indeed. Spent Saturday/Sunday drifting around in a regatta with Peter (Dog Ship from here), then took Tangerine out for a couple of hours afterwards for another drift. We finally got some wind here, I spent a couple of hours belting around at 6.5+kts with a couple of reefs in and the 115% up front, great fun. A weekend spent sailing, BBQing, cold-beering, walking puppy-ing. Fantastic.

Here we are at our Canoe Bay Easter Weekend Regatta just off of Sidney BC.
No wind and lots of current and sun.
