What is the closest Star?

Yah! I know that this is a celestial question and you GPS users won't find it on the GPS.... Or will they?

Re: What is the closest Star?

The sun is only a 8 light-minutes away, then comes Proxima Centauri at over 4 light-years with the other two stars of Alpha Centauri in the 3-star system just a blip further.

See, all that Science Fiction reading in my formative years just paid a big dividend!

Re: What is the closest Star?

A new very close star system was just discovered.
After the Alpha Centauri triple star system comes Barnards star, a red dwarf at about 6 light years I think and then this newly discovered pair of brown dwarfs. There has long been speculation that a brown dwarf may be much closer and may even be part of our solar system lurking waaaaaaaaaay out beyond Pluto. It has been named "Nemesis" for being responsible for apparent "extinction events" where the earth has been bombarded bycomets in the past. It probably does not exist but such brown dwarfs are very hard to find.
My astro rant for the day.

That was last month. You missed him, he sat in with some street musicians on Royal ;-)

Rumor is he may be back for French Quarter Fest this weekend, or Jazz Fest end of the month...

I did look up; But all I saw was the moon and a bunch of twinkling little lights in the night sky Then it started to rain.
