Wanted- Otto, Dead or Alive

Folks,

I'm on a pretty tight budget, but my old Autohelm 1000 is psychotic. It shuts down after being powered on for an extended period of time, and will not power up again, unless power is cut for several minutes.

If any of you have an old Autohelm 800 or 1000 that you'd like to get rid of, please PM me. Broken motor or belt is ok, just looking for circuit boards to transplant to make one good unit.

I'm referring to the old tiller pilots, not the newer ST 1000/2000 models.

Many thanks.

Re: Wanted- Otto, Dead or Alive

Any idea what's shutting it down? I'm not familiar with them - what kind of power source do they have?

It's just a box with a ram powered by a motor, and a simple control board and a fluxgate compass. All powered by 12v DC.

I imagine that it's something like a failing capacitor, but without more expensive test equipment, it would be difficult to isolate. I don't have logic testers for the chips, and I can't go de-soldering every component from the board to test with a multi-meter.

Re: Wanted- Otto, Dead or Alive

Ahhhh...I've seen pictures, but never paid too much attention to them. I wasn't sure if they were battery powered, in which case I was wondering if there was a rechargable battery in there that might be dying. If you don't go for the one offered above, I'd look for bad solder joints in/near the power supply. Does the unit get hot when it's under power? I'm just wondering if it's something temperature related.

Re: Wanted- Otto, Dead or Alive

Bubblehead, it sounds like an overheat problem. Maybe from thermal expansion across a bad circuit trace (hairline crack) or if there's a thermal breaker of some sort on the board, either preventing a fire or simply aged and worn out. Possibly an overload from a corroded connection that's drawing too much power?

Worth a very close eyeball with a magnifier, to see if there's a simple gross problem in there.

You might try contacting Dan Gerhaurdt. c250@mydurango.net. He fixed mine.
