It could only be an improvement for television. If people sit around and watch baseball then they will watch a sailing show, esp. if they are in bikinis. I'd watch, might learn what 'not' to do!

No.

It's just not exciting enough for the masses that are required to tune in to keep a show running and make a network happy. I could see it end up on a small small small network, like a fuel TV type of thing, but if it's a show that you have to see episodes in chronological succession in order for it to make sense (and this would be) then the viewers would be out of the loop if they miss an airing.

I think the clear winning formula - and it's unfortunate it probably still wouldn't work - is to throw a handful of dysfunctional d-list celebrities on a boat (provided by a luxury company with plugs throughout the show) to draw attention to themselves and stir up, basically make it a survivor / celebrity edition / road rules challenge / amazing race B.S. combination. Oh and spotlight foreign charity issues before every commercial break, use one of the crazy incapable celebrities as a spokes-person. Meanwhile Producers need to ****** problems, send them out in bad weather windows for drama, there'll be a "chase" ship (not boat) with catered food and directors and editors alongside all the time to catch footage that's better quality than go-pro's and self-shot handhelds.

Sorry, I'd like to see it work, because I spend hours reading blogs of the same content, but...

This idea just isn't sustainable.

Here is Mr. James Buffett on the espousing on the subject:

Out in Hollywood the paper money rolls
They feed their egos instead of their souls
A million here, a million there
A mindless corporate dance
Gettin' paid for f*ckin' off in the south of France

They don't do the shows
But they act like the stars
They fly around in G-4's and suck on big cigars
It ain't about the talent
It ain't about the skill
It's all about the silly stupid horseshit deal!

Amen Mr Buffett

You might consider some english lessons before going world wide with your T.V show buddy. Take a look at "there" video. OMG, that's like as bad as like people that like use the same word like too much! Everyone's going to click the "dislike" button on your facebook profile I'd say.

What's your point? All but one of the things you listed take place on my boat! (okay, maybe two) I'll leave it to you to guess which one (or two).

I don't know, maybe if the crew waved at passing boats I'd watch a few episodes.

Re: Would a world sailing TV show really make good TV

Years ago a Brazilian family that set off sailing around the world made an agreement to send short 5 minute "reports" to a large TV channel. These reports were aired weekly in segments during another show on Sundays during prime time. They were an astounding success and the country followed their circumnavigation eagerly. They returned to Brazil celebreties. Who would have guessed it would have been so popular?

BTW, the family made a wonderful documentary about their second circumnavigation, following the route of Magellan. You can watch the whole movie on Youtube. Here is the trailer:

Re: Would a world sailing TV show really make good TV

The basis for good television - a good STORY. What makes a good story? Characters. Are there Characters on this crew? Ones that the viewer will take an vested interest in? If not then it's just a travel log, not a reality show. Characters - that is your key.

The Shards have had a sailing show for the past eight or nine years on cable but it's not just about sailing, it's also about the people and locations to which they sail. They are Sailnet members and post every now and forever.
