I nominate myself... and as my first act, I'll ban me.

I am not seeing a problem here.

Re: Increase in the number of Moderators

One option I've seen used with some success in other message boards is a real reputation system, with the option to downrep or up rep.

The benefit being, you can implement it in such a way that if a user reaches a certain negative reputation threshold, they are immediately banned. This way the community can, in a way, regulate itself. If you post a personal attack, I find it likely that you'd be downrepped into oblivion fast enough to be banned (especially more than once). There are a few different vBulletin plugins that should do this and I've seen it work in a few cases.

In theory, it's a great idea and it -MAY- work here, people here are professional enough to not abuse it. OTOH I personally know of two forums that used this system and abandoned it because of abuse, but the forum was full of entirely different types of people.

Adding more moderators is a real tradeoff. If you add too many, the moderators tend to step all over each other and create their own drama. If you have too few, it's impossible to police for the occasional flame or bad user. I personally think keeping a smaller number of moderators, but find a way for the community to police itself, would be most efficient.

Re: Increase in the number of Moderators

I believe there was an up-rep down-rep feature before I got here and it was eliminated.

The problem is, while one may be impressed by the quality of participation today, give the internet community the ability to sling a down-rep and it attracts the personalities that like to do it.

I find any rep to be a bit silly. I like the 'like' feature. It can mean just about anything from 'I agree with what you said' to 'you said it well', it isn't confined to suggesting the poster deserves creds.

Re: Increase in the number of Moderators

Yes, the negative rep system led to some rep slinging wars that got too many noses out of joint. It was eliminated/modified to an 'atta boy/girl' only system with far fewer issues. However within a year or so the 'like' feature was added and that's pretty well replaced the rep system though it's still there if you want to use it (in a positive way, of course )

Re: Increase in the number of Moderators

I rarely have my posts changed, nor get banned. Clearly there aren't enough moderators

Heh, I used to administrate and moderate a forum with 5000 *very* active members, the mods here seem to do a decent job as far as I am concerned. I respect their decisions as I know from experience that they aren't decisions that are made lightly and without considerable thought.
If the mods/admin think they need more help, fine, if they don't, fine.
