On my 14.6 kayak, Where should I mount my lateen sail, I would say the size but it will be changing until I find the best size to suite it

Matt, look at the mast placement and attachment system on windsurfing boards. Often you can buy used windsurfing gear for little money, mast (which you would have to cut short), mount and sail. Typically the mast would be mounted right in front of your seat. If you mount it on a crosspiece straddling the gunwales you will have more leg room, otherwise it will be between your legs. Pick the biggest rudder you can find - it helps to steer and stabilize the kayak. Or make an amu from a windsurfing board, preferably with a dagger board. It has to be fairly well designed or you will be in the drink all the time.

You might try Kayaking & Canoeing | Kayak, Canoe, and Paddle Resource: Paddling.net for kayak questions.

Unless you add amas and lee boards expect to be only a downwind sailor. I think the limitations of a masted sail is not worth it in a kayak. Unless you go full bore with all the accessories like a bat sail, you are only going to get downwind with it.

Check out the WindPaddle.

Thats right. It looks like the only rule is: "there are no rules."

Sorry Matt.... but I don't have a clue on how to do that sort of stuff. Someone else may chime in soon however.

Re: Where to mount sail on kayak

I am not sure about rounding the luff and foot bit. I cut my sails "flat" so the edges are parallel to the boom and Gaff. The long trailing edge (I can never remember sail terminology) I also cut with no curve.
Polytarp sails provides these nice little pulleys that I have never been able to use. I have built 4 of their sails I think.
